THE POET
Pt. Birju Maharaj is an imaginative and highly sensitive poet, writing under the pen - name "Brijshyam" which is a synonym of his name 'Brijmohan'.
He approaches diverse subjects the spectrum ranging from Krishna Bhakti to modern poetry & satire.
He has to his credit numerous lyrical compositions, Taal -  based compositions ,  pure dance compositions, bhaav based compositions, etc.
Krishna Bhakti has all aspects of Vatsalya, Madhurya, Sakhya bhaav. 
The various moods and situations of Nayikas (Ashtanayikas) and age wise description  (mugdha, praudha) come across with grace finesse and intricacy.
Various smilies, metaphors and other figures of speech come spontaneously in his works conveying 
auxiliary meanings, ideas and feelings.
His poetic works are published in 'Brijshyam Kahe', 'Anubhuti'  & 'Anubhuti - 2'
A beautiful example of the complex relationship between Radha , Krishna and his flute is depicted in this poetry - 

"एक बार बंसी ना  बाजी  घनश्याम सों 
गोपी मुस्कात रहीं  निरखत  हैं अचरज सों I

                                 कान्हा की प्रीत भरी सांस दई राधा ने 
                                 बंसी रिसयाय  गयी बोलत न श्याम सों 

बाजी न बंसी केहि कारण मन भेद गयो 
कान्हा कर जोड़ ठाढ़े पूछत  हैं मुरली सों 

                                 देख व्यथा कान्हा की बंसी  नें मान तजि 
                                 बाजी रे बाजी फिर बाजी बृजश्याम सों "
                                                                                                       - बृज श्याम
